Figure out the full path before drilling or cutting a single hole. The easiest runs use an unfinished basement, crawl space, or attic as a highway: drop the wire down inside the wall from above, or up from below, rather than fishing it horizontally through multiple stud bays. A horizontal run — say, from a receiver to a speaker on the other side of a room — almost always means going up into the ceiling or down into the floor first, then back down or up at the destination, rather than trying to go straight across through several studs.
Use the stud finder to confirm where studs actually are before choosing your entry and exit points, and to check for existing wiring or plumbing in the path. Most stud finders sold today also flag live electrical wiring, which is worth the extra few dollars.
Almost every failed DIY speaker wire run has the same root cause: trying to fish wire horizontally through multiple stud bays instead of finding a vertical path through the attic, basement, or crawl space.
This is the single most common thing that stops a straightforward vertical drop cold. Many homes — especially anything built to modern fire code, and plenty of older ones too — have horizontal wood blocking nailed between studs partway up the wall, usually around waist height. It exists to slow the spread of fire and smoke inside the wall cavity, and it also stops your fish tape or weighted line dead.
If you hit an obstruction partway down and can't tell what it is, don't force it. Options at that point: cut a small access hole at the obstruction to drill through the blocking with a long bit and re-drop the line, or reroute the run entirely if a cleaner path exists. This is also the point where a lot of people decide the job is worth handing to a professional.
A stalled fish tape doesn't always mean fire blocking — it can also be insulation bunching up, a wire or pipe crossing the cavity, or the tape simply catching on a rough drywall edge at the entry hole. Try a slightly different angle before assuming you've hit blocking and need to cut a new access point.
A middle floor of a multi-story home — finished ceiling below, finished floor above, no crawl space in sight — is the genuinely hard case. There's no easy vertical path to drop a line through, and cutting multiple access holes to fish wire horizontally through several stud bays gets impractical fast. Two realistic paths from here:
None of the fishing techniques above work on masonry — there's no cavity to fish through. For brick, concrete block, or poured concrete walls, the practical options are a surface-mounted raceway, running wire through an existing conduit or chase if the home already has one, or drilling a single small hole with a masonry bit only at the specific point a wire genuinely needs to cross the wall (for example, out to an outdoor speaker), sealed properly afterward against moisture and pests.
DIY makes sense for a straightforward run with attic or basement access and no surprises along the way. It's worth hiring a professional installer when you're dealing with a middle-floor run with no vertical access, masonry construction, a historic home where you're not confident about what's inside the walls, or a run that involves multiple ceiling penetrations for an in-ceiling Atmos speaker layer. The cost of a bad patch job or an accidentally severed wire (electrical, not just speaker) usually outweighs what you'd save doing it yourself.
